The Country’s Challenges

With 171 million inhabitants, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with two-thirds of the population living in rural areas. Despite some economic growth, one in four people still live below the poverty line, and maternal (deaths during pregnancy or childbirth) and infant (children under five) mortality rates remain very high.

In addition, with 80% of its land in flood plains, the country is particularly vulnerable to recurring risks such as cyclones, floods, cold spells, heat waves and storms. Rising sea levels are causing saltwater intrusion and freshwater shortages, which are creating serious health problems for the most vulnerable.

In order to protect pregnant women, expectant mothers, babies and teenage girls, we are currently running two health projects, one in the centre of the country, in the district of Brahmanbaria, and the other in the south-west, in the district of Shatkhira.

From 2005 to 2016, we also carried out several projects to enrol children who had never been to school or had left school too early.

What Sets us Apart
  • In-depth knowledge of the field: our local team is from the country itself;
  • Collaboration: we co-develop all our projects with our local partners in order to strengthen their long-term capacity;
  • Community involvement: we encourage the local population to participate in identifying health issues and finding solutions;
  • Leverage: we improve the health and education of thousands of women and children by training key individuals who in turn train others and spread this knowledge on a large scale.

Asma, Pregnant woman in Bangladesh

My mother-in-law told me to attend health awareness sessions for pregnant women. I learned that it is important to attend prenatal care visits at community clinics and not to give birth at home, as this can be risky if there are complications during delivery.
