We Contribute to Better Health Policy

In the past, El Salvador’s Ministry of Health often focused its health efforts solely on strengthening health services.

Difficult access to health centres due to a lack of transport, for example, was largely ignored. In addition, the Salvadoran government has placed very little emphasis on raising awareness of health issues among women and their families. The majority of women are not sufficiently informed about the risks associated with pregnancy and are therefore unable to make the right decisions to prevent them.

Since the launch of Enfants du Monde’s health project in El Salvador, the number of deaths has fallen sharply in the eight municipalities concerned. The explanation lies in the health approach used by our Swiss NGO.

Convinced by the results we have achieved in implementing this approach at the local level, the Salvadoran Ministry of Health has requested Enfants du Monde’s support in applying the same approach nationwide. Our Swiss NGO has been working with the Salvadoran Ministry of Health to consider the best way to integrate our community health approach into its national health policy and thus apply it throughout the country.

Hans Haldimann, Journalist, Swiss television :

I was impressed to see that pregnant women are less afraid to visit the health centre and give birth there. Until now, women only gave birth at home. This led to high maternal and infant mortality rates.

Our Impact
  • More than 500,000 pregnant women, young mothers and babies in the country have benefited from our health project between 2017 and 2021.
  • During information meetings, pregnant women and their families learn to recognise the danger signs associated with pregnancy.
  • Ongoing training is provided to healthcare workers.
  • If no ambulance is available, taxi drivers or the police provide emergency transport to the hospital.
  • Healthcare workers across the country are trained to apply the health approach promoted by Enfants du Monde.

Enfants du Monde works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of El Salvador, the Pan American Health Organisation and the World Health Organisation.
