The security crisis in Burkina Faso has led to a significant increase in humanitarian needs, affecting approximately 4.7 million people, or one in five Burkinabè. These critical needs are mainly concentrated in six regions of the country, including the Centre-Nord region: Kaya and Pissila.

The region faces significant challenges in terms of water, hygiene, sanitation and other essential needs such as nutrition, health and protection. In addition, in the education sector, many schools in the region remain closed, affecting many pupils.

Improving the Situation Through a Comprehensive Approach

Faced with these pressing challenges, Enfants du Monde has been mandated by the Regional Humanitarian Fund for West and Central Africa (FHRAOC) to carry out a project to provide access to water and hygiene and to enrol children in school in a safe environment, in collaboration with Faso-Action pour le développement communautaire (FDC).

This project, which supports a multisectoral and integrated response to the needs of affected populations in the Centre-Nord region, will run for one year from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024.

Our Impact

  • Ensure secure, adequate and equitable access to drinking water to meet the needs of the local population, including internally displaced persons;
  • Rehabilitate and build water collection and storage points;
  • Train craftsmen and repairers to ensure the sustainability of rehabilitated or newly built water points;
  • Train teachers;
  • Train mentors to support students who have dropped out of school;
  • Distribute rice and beans
  • Distribute radios and provide education through radio, with the participation of community mentors
  • Raise awareness among the population about the importance of education and target students who have dropped out of school
  • Create community management committees to monitor the education programme.

With the deterioration of the security situation, the north-central region is experiencing a massive influx of internally displaced persons. Basic social services are severely impacted. This project addresses the education, drinking water, hygiene and sanitation needs of at least 15,490 people affected by the crisis.
