Burkina Faso faces major challenges in the area of education, compounded by the security crisis and the population’s large instability. By the end of elementary school, barely 2 out of 3 students have adequate levels in reading and math: it is to combat this reality that we are carrying out a project to strengthen the Burkina Faso education system, on behalf of the Swiss Agency of Development and Cooperation.

The objective of the project is to improve education in a sustainable way, in direct collaboration with the Burkina Faso Ministry of Basic Education and the NGO Children Planète Enfants et Développement, in three regions: the central north, central west et the Hauts-Bassins. We concentrate on 3 aspects: the training of elementary and early childhood teachers, developing access to pre-school education, and strengthening management skills of local school system managers.

Our impact

  • Teachers are trained in an adapted pedagogy and benefit from continuous training
  • For pre-school children, we implement accessible educational solutions that respect their cultures
  • We improve the management of education by strengthening the local system already in place and increasing the participation of the population

Better teacher training

In Burkina Faso, teachers are often poorly trained and ill equipped to deal with the reality of school: overcrowded classes, lack of materials, a language instruction (French) that is not mastered by students because it is not their native language… We implement a team of education experts to improve the training of Burkina Faso teachers throughout their careers. Thanks to better teaching methods that are adapted to children’s needs, culture and local languages, thousands of students can learn better and benefit from a quality education.

Development of quality and accessible pre-school education

In Burkina Faso, only 6.6% of children ages 3 to 5 years of age are enrolled in school because there are very few establishments that can welcome young children. These establishments can be early learning centers, but more often they are “bisongos,” structures implemented by communities with little resources. They are led by those nicknamed “little papas” and “little mamas” who are poorly trained. However, preschool education is essential for students to learn more easily and succeed better in elementary school.

It is why the project aims to test and develop different formulas for early learning and education centers adapted to the youngest children and to the local culture.

Strengthening decentralized management

Since 2014, the state of Burkina Faso has delegated the management of elementary education to communes, notably for the purchase of school supplies, the supply of food for cafeterias, as well as the construction of buildings and latrines. However, this management leaves much to be desired: food orders arrive too late, school supplies are available in January when the start of the school year began in October…

Our ambition is therefore to strengthen the management capacities of communes so that children can study in better conditions.

At the same time, we will also train parent associations and committees who contribute to the functioning of the schools. These groups, for example, are responsible for organizing children’s enrollment and play an important role in explaining the significance of school to communities, therefore playing a crucial role in the education of children.
