Chad is experiencing a major humanitarian crisis, marked by conflicts, forced displacement, food insecurity, and health emergencies, affecting more than a third of the population. In April 2024, following the resumption of war in neighboring Sudan, nearly half a million Sudanese refugees fled the fighting and sought refuge in eastern Chad, putting additional strain on this already vulnerable country.

The Aboutengué camp, located in the Ouaddaï province in eastern Chad, is about 50 kilometers from the Sudanese border, in a secure area. Currently, 60% of children in the camp are out of school, which seriously threatens their future and, by extension, that of their community.

To address this, and with the support of the local NGO Association of Women for the Support of Development Initiatives (AFAID), we are providing 12 to 17-year-old youth in the Aboutengue camp with a secure and adapted learning environment, enabling them to resume or continue their education. Special attention is given to gender equality, as girls face numerous barriers to education. The project promotes their continued schooling, particularly by addressing their menstrual hygiene needs, in alignment with Chad’s National Strategy on Water, Hygiene, and Sanitation.

Souleymane Ouedraogo, Country Director, Chad, Enfants du Monde

Thanks to this project, hundreds of refugee children from the Aboutengué camp, as well as children from the host communities, will return to school in a secure and adapted environment. By providing them with quality education and tailored support, we are giving them hope and a future.

Our impact

  • An adapted learning approach: Students are grouped according to their age and level, with targeted learning content that respects their culture and religion;
  • Teachers, including also among refugees, are recruited and trained to ensure quality teaching;
  • Equipped infrastructure: Learning spaces are built or renovated according to the needs of the students. Educational materials in Arabic are provided, and each student receives an individual school kit ;
  • Community support: Existing local structures are strengthened to monitor and guide the education of children. Awareness campaigns are conducted with families and leaders in the camp to encourage schooling, particularly for girls ;
  • Education on health and hygiene: To support the schooling of girls, they receive menstrual hygiene kits and tailored training. Access to clean drinking water and handwashing facilities is provided in the schools ;
  • Child protection: Systems are put in place to report and support vulnerable children, especially those separated from their families. A complaint management mechanism and training on the prevention of sexual abuse are also established to ensure a safe environment.
