The purpose of my visit was to make a video to show you\u00a0<strong>the importance of this program for Mayan children<\/strong>. The main language spoken here is\u00a0<strong>Q&#8217;eqchi&#8217;, one of the 22 Mayan languages<\/strong>. The children speak Q&#8217;eqchi&#8217; at home and don&#8217;t understand Spanish, which is Guatemala&#8217;s official language. Teachers have to manage multi-level classes with very large numbers of pupils. The school principal explains that\u00a0<strong>Enfants du Monde&#8217;s bilingual school material is very useful for teachers, as it is designed both in Q&#8217;eqchi&#8217; and Spanish<\/strong>. The children are aware that learning to read and write in Kaqchikel will enable them to communicate more easily with their families, and to find work in other regions. It is Central America\u2019s most populous country, with over 17.3 million inhabitants. Income inequalities are among the worst in the world, with 260 families holding 57% of the country&#8217;s wealth. It is a transit point for drugs, migrants, money, and weapons. The justice system is inefficient and corrupt.
